Wellington Film Society will screen each film in its 2025 programme twice, doubling the offering to current and prospective members for the same low price.
Wellington Film Society (WFS) brings hundreds of Wellingtonians together at the Embassy Theatre on Monday nights throughout the year to watch a diverse range of classic and contemporary cinema from around the world. Special screenings this year featured in-person introductions, including from directors Christine Jeffs and Dame Jane Campion.
Today we’re excited to announce that each film in our 2025 programme will be screened twice:
- The first screening will be at 6pm on Monday nights.
- The second screening will be at 8.30pm on Monday nights (or occasionally, when the film is particularly long, at 8.30pm on Tuesday nights).
Full details of our 2025 programme (due to start in late February) will be announced over the coming months, but will include at least 32 films by directors including: Bob Fosse, Dario Argento, and Powell & Pressburger. Keep an eye on our website and email newsletter for more details.
This move follows substantial growth for WFS in the last few years, both in terms of memberships (now over 1,500) and average attendance (over 540 people), and will enable more people to join and experience being part of this community.
It adds flexibility, with all members being able to come to either screening each week. This means:
- you can come to the screening that suits you best that week, for example if you need to work late, or have family or other commitments,
- you can have dinner at home or a local eatery beforehand, and
- nearby parking is free for the second screening time.
The per-screening cost of a full membership was already below $3.50, with full memberships costing only $120 for a calendar year. This change offers even better value in 2025 with 32 films all screening twice, meaning 64 potential options for you each year. For those wishing to try it out, we also offer a $40 Three Film Sampler pass, which can be upgraded to a full membership. Memberships are open, and if purchased now are valid until this time next year. They also make great Christmas gifts!
WFS is proud of the positive contribution to Wellingtonians’ cultural lives we’ve made over the last 78 years. We welcome new members to make seeing an interesting film on the big screen a weekly ritual, with friends, family, or on your own!
