To round off another wonderful year of films, on December 1st our members descended in droves upon the Welsh Dragon to show off their knowledge. Our year-end quiz tested the punters on what they knew about this year’s programme, as well as our favourite movie themes and events that took place in the wider cinema world.
Our first round was on 2025 in cinema, identifying the directors who won this year’s biggest prizes. The focus of round two was on animals in this year’s programme, and teams had to identify films from their images of cats and dogs, as well as figure out who Marietta, Tako, Hola, Rocco, Mela and Ettore were (see answer 1 below). Our theme of ‘Dancing on the Edge’ inspired a round about dance films, before we explored the films in our programme that were based on books or remade into other films. Finally, teams were shown the ‘Nestflix’ pages for fictional films and asked what real-life films these appeared in. What Christmas film, for example, features Angels with Filthy Souls, with the famous line “Keep the change, ya filthy animal?” (answer 2)
It was a great opportunity for our members to mix and mingle, and the quiz was enthusiastically and adeptly run by the quizmasters, Miles and Russ, as well as a rotating cast of committee members marking the answer pages, updating scores, and running off to buy more ballpoint pens. Thanks also to our hosts at the Welsh Dragon for making their space available to us in a busy holiday season.
In the end, two teams took out the championships – the Frankensteins in our earlier quiz, and It’s a Quiz-mas Miracle in the late-night quiz. Our members made sure to come with their best team names, too: some notable examples include the Learner Herzogs, Jingle Bellzapoppin’, Strangers on a Table, You’ve Got Males, and multiple puns on Cleo from 5 to 7.
The quiz was very popular this year, to the degree that we ran out of quiz booklets for our second run and had to make some on the fly! It’s great to see that our members would turn out for an event like this, and so we’ll definitely have to make it part of our annual calendar.
