Gallant Indies offers a behind-the-scenes look into a completely reimagined production of Jean-Philippe Rameau’s opera “Les Indes Galantes”. Artist Clément Cogitore uses the performance to tackle issues of racism, colonialism and slavery. 30 dancers are brought together from the styles of hip-hop, vogue, krump, popping, locking and flexing to stage a totally unique visual element.
The film details a year of rehearsals leading up to the groundbreaking performance at the 350th anniversary of Opéra national de Paris. Director Philippe Béziat introduces the audience to a diverse cast, many from former French colonies. Lovers of art, music and dance will be sure to enjoy this celebration of creativity.
“Gallant Indies celebrates the creative process and what we see is a good-hearted spirit that has collaborators from different artistic disciplines transform the feeling of this baroque opera into a dance filled epic dedicated to the unifying nature of love.” – POV Magazine
