Reframing Mental Health

Aotearoa Mental Health Film Festival

Mental health narratives have long been depicted in cinema –  for example, the recent WFS screening of Nightmare Alley shows the ravages of addiction and substance use disorder in the characters of Pete and Stan. These depictions are often negative, contributing to limited societal understanding of mental health conditions and the stigmatisation and discrimination of people living with mental illness.

The Aotearoa Mental Health Film Festival aims to shift this narrative of mental health in cinema through a film festival of nine empowering short films and a panel discussion with mental health experts.

The Festival will screen at the Embassy Theatre on Friday 24 and Tuesday 28 November 2023 from 6:30pm.
